12 Questions with CrossFit Athlete Marcus Filly


1) Who is Marcus Filly? (where are you from, what do you do, a bit about yourself (hobbies, etc)

I'm from Marin County California. I'm a husband and father first. Additionally I'm a health and fitness coach, athlete, and culinary enthusiast.

2) How many years have you been training?

I consider my training age to be about 20 years. Started in the weight room at 13 years old doing bodybuilding stuff at the globo gym and have never stopped.

3) Whats been the most challenging/hardest part of your journey so far? and how have you overcome them (set backs, rejections, injuries, basically anything difficult that you have had to overcome)

The hardest years of my life around training were between college and the end of my graduate school. I was a bit lost in my life. Not sure what my true path was supposed to be yet and the uncertainty was crushing me. I wasn't focused on my training, I sustained injuries and set backs regularly, and it was all because I was not following my true purpose as a health and fitness professional yet.

4) What does your typical workout/diet routine look like?

I train 5 days a week right now. 3 days are double sessions and 2 days are single sessions. I stick to a whole foods approach to eating. I make all my own food and avoid gluten and most dairy. Outside of that my meals always have protein from animal sources, veggies, and some starch.

5) What new knowledge have you learned over this past year regarding training, lifestyle and nutrition? 

This past year I've had to learn how to make the most of less time. With a baby now I don't have the luxury of time. So I've become even more efficient with my meal prep, training, and prioritized sleep more than ever before. When you have time taken from you there is only one way to keep doing the things you love. Make better use of the time you have. I wasted so much time before kids!

6) Whats your favourite cheat/Treat meal?

I love popcorn with my wife. And I love movie popcorn. No added butter but just a large bag of popcorn with a monstrous diet coke to go with it!

7) Whats one supplement that you could not live without?

I absolutely love my Strawberry Revive-Rx Recover. This supplement I take every workout session and I take 6 scoops of it. It tastes delicious and has been a staple in my recovery program for years.

8) If you had to start your Journey from scratch with your health & physique what would you do differently and why?

I would go back as far as I can and alter my diet. I would start eating the way I eat now as young as possible. Our food makes us who we are and there were some pretty bad years in there when I was younger and food quality wasn't as important to me.

9) Who do you look upto in the fitness industry and why? 

I find inspiration from so many people around me. When I was younger I used to have fitness idols that I looked up to. Now I have learned that inspiration comes from all different types of people. Those that share the gym floor with me daily, people on social media, all over. I try to make sure I see the inspiration in everyone around me. Hard work is inspiring no matter where it comes from.

10) If you had to give one bit of advice to people starting out what would that be?

Start simple. To avoid complicating things in an age where training programs are flashy just to be flashy. Literally learn how to squat, push, pull, bend, and repeat this over and over for years. You will earn the right to do flashy things soon enough, but the strength foundation must be built.

11) What new goals do you have on the horizon?

I want to continue to grow my family and my business. These are important years. I'm enjoying the process and trying to set up my 40's and 50's for glorious work life balance.
