12 Questions with CrossFit Athlete Tricia Davis

1) Who is Tricia Davis? (where are you from, what do you do, a bit about yourself (hobbies, etc

I was born in Jamacia and moved to New York when I was 4. In 2006, I moved to Florida when I was 9 and I have been here ever since. I am a member of Crossfit Junkies and this year I recently joined the Florida Grid League to play for the Orlando Aces as a strength specialist! When I'm not at the gym, I love reading books and watching movies. I work in the ER at Advent Health and I am aspiring to become a doctor.

2) How many years have you been training? (Including how you got started, etc)

I officially got introduced to the world of sports when I moved to Florida in 2006. I have been involved ever since. In middle school, I ran cross country and track. Fun fact, I still hold the 100m dash record for 8th grade girls at my middle school since I broke it in 2010. Also, I am one of the few people who joined the 100 mile club and completed it for all 3 years. In high school, I branched out and got involved with more sports. I did weightlifting, flag football, and basketball along with cross country and track. When I got to college, I played women's rugby for UCF. I officially joined crossfit in 2017 and I haven't looked back. In 2021, I made a New Year's resolution of doing 1 new thing every month and that led me to participating in the American Grid Trials. This ultimately led me to the Florida Grid League and it's been one heck of a crazy ride.

3) Whats been the most challenging/hardest part of your journey so far? and how have you overcome them (set backs, rejections, injuries, basically anything difficult that you have had to overcome)

Sometimes I struggle with imposter syndrome. It's basically when you doubt yourself and your abilities. You feel like all your achievements happened out of luck. It's been happening a little bit more frequently, and it affects me both in the gym and outside of it. When I joined the Orlando Aces, the first 2 matches we had, I felt it a lot. I literally started questioning how I even made it on the team to begin with. I've been overcoming these feelings that sneak up on me by surrounding myself with a great support system. I'm also working on being more confident in myself and who I am as an individual. In this life you really need to focus on not comparing yourself to others. Be proud of who you are and how far you've come. Everyone is on their own journey and you have to trust and believe that you are exactly where you need to be.

4) What does your typical workout/diet routine look like? (With any particular protocols you rate).

Since I work 12hr shifts at the hospital, I am usually only able to train for 4 days for 2-3 hrs. On the days that I train, I usually start at 4 pm with my open gym crew at Junkies. Sometimes a little earlier depnding on the day. I like to do some kind of strength WOD first and then I transition into a metcon after. When it comes to my diet, I eat pretty clean for the most part. I'm really big on fruits and vegetables because I crave them all the time. My go to protein is chicken, but I've found a new love for tuna. I do eat a bowl of cereal almost everyday and I like to have a couple of coconut cookies here and there. I don't crave candy or sweets so those to remind myself that having fun foods is okay. My relationship with food has come along way and right now I'm in a good place.

5) What new knowledge have you learned over this past year regarding training, lifestyle and nutrition? (And How has it changed your focus for the future)

Don't compare yourself to others.
Self-discovery happens outside of your comfort zone.
Self-confidence is a beautiful thing.
You need to build a strong foundation in order to be an expert.
Consistency is key.
Practice gratitude every day.

6) Whats your favourite cheat/Treat meal?

I love cereal! Specifically, Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds!

7) Whats one supplement that you could not live without?

My Dymatize ISO Whey Protein Powder! I'm so picky with protein powder, but this one seemed to stick with me.

8) If you had to start your Journey from scratch with both your health & physique what would you do differently and why?

I would be more involved with nutrition. I didn't realize how broken my relationship with food was until I joined crossfit. It has taken quite some time to undo a lot of my beliefs when it comes to nutrition. I still have so much to learn about food and my body, but I am now.

9) Who do you look upto in the fitness industry and why?

Julie Foucher! I aspire to become a doctor and I think it's incredible that she was able to juggle going to medical school, train for crossfit, and even compete in the Crossfit Games. Her new involvement with Crossfit Precision Care is inspiring and I hope that one day I can also make a difference in the world of health as a physician too.

10) If you had to give one bit of advice to people starting out what would that be?

Don't be afraid to try new things. You need to be able to get comfortable with being uncomfortable because self-discovery happens outside of your comfort zone.

11) What new goals do you have on the horizon?

I want to find a new workout routine that will be more beneficial to me. I'm also focusing on working on my weaknesses. So that means increasing my gymnastic skills and working on my cardio capacity.
