1) Who is Bethany Ann ? (where are you from, what do you do, a bit about yourself (hobbies, etc)
Born and raised in Houston, Texas, I’m just a simple, laidback girl who enjoys living a healthy lifestyle and fulfilling my purpose on God’s time. I graduated from Sam Houston State University in 2010 with a BA in Fashion Merchandising and Minor is General Business.
I currently work for a supplement distributor and manufacturer where I am in charge of the operations of the business. I’ve been there for 4 years and absolutely love it.
I started Crossfit in February 2012 and qualified as individual at the 2013 South Central Regional just within my first year of starting. In 2014 I qualified as individual and also team, (that year I went team- SO MUCH FUN!) In 2015 I focused more on Weightlifting. I competed in the 53kg weight class and took 6th at the American Open and 9th at Nationals.
I enjoy lots of quiet time, where I read my bible, or reading just in general. I’m currently reading like 5 books lol. I’m also getting married in 3 months in the Dominican Republic which I’m super excited about!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE spending quality time with my loved ones. I lost my mother when I was 19, an my grandfather last year, and that was then that I realized to cherish every moment you have with the people you love most.
2) How many years have you been training?
I’ve been doing Crossfit for 6 years and have been competitively training for 6. I knew the day I started Crossfit, I wanted to compete.
3) Whats been the most challenging/hardest part of your journey so far? and how have you overcome them (set backs, rejections, injuries, basically anything difficult that you have had to overcome)
I think the most challenging part of my journey has been keeping up with my competition each year. It can be discouraging when I don’t meet my expectations. But I know that I just need to trust the process and keep training hard.
4) What does your typical workout/diet routine look like?
Right now my training schedule is not as intense since I’m not competing anytime soon. My workouts have been pretty chill to where I might just do a class wod and that’s it. Normally I do skill and strength on top of a couple workouts which take about 2 1/2 hours, sometimes longer.
As far as my diet, I don't count my macros like most athletes do. I eat clean for the most part, but when I crave something, I’ll eat it.
5) What new knowledge have you learned over this past year regarding training, lifestyle and nutrition?
I’ve learned to not take this sport too seriously. We have goals to get to Regionals and the Crossfit Games, I get it, but putting this sport ahead of things that matter most just isn’t worth it. Balance is important. Living your life outside is the gym is important. Having fun is what it’s all about. When you constantly compare yourself with athletes, trying to beat them in a workout, beating yourself up about not being “good enough” just takes the fun out of the sport. I’ve learned to be grateful for the opportunity, and having the capability to do what I love.
6) Whats your favourite cheat/Treat meal?
I eat pizza so much that I don’t even consider it a cheat meal anymore haha. But my guilty pleasure has to be hot wings and fried pickles!
7) one supplement that you could not live without?
It used to be Preworkout but I can’t even take that stuff anymore. I can’t live without my BCAAs, creatine and beta- alanine.
8) If you had to start out from scratch with your physique what would you do differently and why?
I wouldn’t change anything. I believe when we workout and build muscle your body will transform into how it’s supposed to look! :-)
9) Who do you look upto in the fitness industry and why?
Kara Webb. I love her personality and I love how she trains and her mindset. When we went to the Crossfit games last year she was being interviewed and I looked over at my fiancé and said “I wish we were friends.” Haha.
10) If you had to give one bit of advice to people starting out what would that be?
Don’t feel like you have to be in shape or look a certain way to start Crossfit. Yes the workouts are hard and yes it can be intimidating, but we all had our “first day at Crossfit” and we didn’t walk in being a bad ass. Also- be patient, positive and stay humble. That’s our motto at our gym, Skyline Crossfit.
11) What new goals are on the horizon?
Building a custom home and possibly start a family. I still plan to compete in Crossfit too! I’ll be a Master in 2 years so I’ll be competing in that division so soon, so crazy to think about. I still feel like I’m 25. Also to continue to be an inspiration and motivation to women. :-)
