12 Questions With CrossFit Athlete Bethany Shadburne

1) Who is Bethany Shadburne? (where are you from, what do you do, a bit about yourself (hobbies, etc)

I was born in Orlando Florida BUT 6 weeks after I was born my family moved to Austin, Tx so I definitely consider myself an “austinite” as we like to call each other over here. As of January I am officially a full time athlete. I work a little at my gym “Streamline Crossfit” and have started putting together seminars to support myself. Hobbies: I love being outdoors, hiking, etc things of that nature.

2) How many years have you been training?

I have been doing Crossfit for almost 3 years now.

3) Whats been the most challenging/hardest part of your journey so far? and how have you overcome them (set backs, rejections, injuries, basically anything difficult that you have had to overcome)

Thankfully I have not had any chronic injuries since entering Crossfit. Hardest part for me has been the Olympic weight lifting because I had no Idea what a snatch or clean was when I began, and I had also not ever touched a barbell and also had to get a few gymnastics moves perfected  (mostly on Muscle ups). Other than that it’s been pretty smooth sailing for me and I’m just really enjoying the journey and everything that comes with it!

4) What does your typical workout/diet routine look like?

The Diet I follow is more paleo esk eating and the workout that I follow is “black magic training” where there’s a weight lifting section Two wods (usually mans) and some accessory work.

5) What new knowledge have you learned over this past year regarding training, lifestyle and nutrition?

Definitely started taking my nutrition more seriously this year. I feel like that is a huge piece of the puzzle when you start going up against the big dogs and definitely also taking my recovery days more seriously. Overall I’m  just taking better care of my which I feel is  a huge component to doing well in the gym.

6) Whats your favourite cheat/Treat meal?

I’m not a huge sweets person but I do like me a nice chocolate or almond based ice cream every once in a while (or a couple nice adult beverages after a long grueling competition weekend “mango margaritas” & “Moscow mules”)

7) One supplement that you could not live without?

Honestly, I have gotten away from taking a ton of supplements so I wouldn’t be sad about any going without. However,  I would be sad if you took away my food, water and sleep haha.

8) If you had to start out from scratch with your physique what would you do differently and why?

I wouldn’t change anything I’ve done over the years,  I like the way my body has developed and what I’ve done to become the athlete I am today. I started as a gymnast and moved my way towards triathlons, half marathons, obstacle course races, body building and now Crossfit.

I believe all the things I have done since the age of five have made me who I am today, and had given me the physique I have today (Plus good genetics so “thank you Mama”).

9) Who do you look upto in the fitness industry and why?

There isnt anyone in particular that I look up to in the fitness industry, I just enjoy watching people put in the work that they said they were going to do and stick with what they said they were going to stick with. I like to look up to people that love to work hard in the gym but are better people outside of the gym. And that’s what I want to be for people.. all this “fitness stuff” goes away so at the end of the day I want people to look up to me not only because I’m a great athlete but because I’m a good person outside of the gym that treats everyone well.

10) If you had to give one bit of advice to people starting out what would that be?

Advice I would give to people to are just starting out and want to be competitive .. keep it simple find a coach that you trust, stick to their programming ( and no one else’s), follow it to a T and watch the magic happen.. it doesn’t have to be difficult yes the actual work will be but don’t make everything else confusing and hard.. train your butt off in the gym do what you can outside of the gym to life a healthy life style and see where it takes you. There’s no magical pill only hard work, consistency and dedication.

11) What new goals are on the horizon? 12) Where can people find you? (website, social media accounts)

New goals: Just keep growing as an athlete! I’m still so new in this industry and I have A LOT to learn so the only goals I have right now are being becoming a better athlete each week, each month, each year I compete. To become the Athlete I’m supposed to be. I’m very excited to see where my Crossfit career takes me and I know it’s nothing that can be rushed. I’m just enjoying the process and allowing the puzzle pieces to fall where they may.

12) Where can people find you? (Website, Social media accounts).
