12 Questions With CrossFit Athlete/Coach Carly Fuhrer

1) Who is Carly Fuhrer? (where are you from, what do you do, a bit about yourself (hobbies, etc)

I am a 26 year old, side pony wearing country loving girl from a small town in Oregon. I have a small but amazing family, every single one of them have taught me something special and are a huge part of who I am today. I was raised to be kind, caring, hardworking, and knowing I could do whatever I set my mind too. I did all the sports you can think of, from soccer to street hockey, If I could do it I was going too. I fell in love with basketball, It was and always will be my favorite. Thru high school I played volleyball, basketball and ran track, when I wasn’t doing that I was showing and riding horses. If I could I would still ride daily, its one of the most enjoyable “hobbies” I have ever had. Recently I decided to go back to school in hope to achieve a teaching degree. Outside of CrossFit, I love everything outdoors. Biking, hiking, snow sports, water sports, riding, and being able to travel to new places. I enjoy the simple things such as family & friend time, reading, and baking! I strongly believe in doing as much as I can, experience as much life as I can because we truly are gifted each day. I want everyone to remember that.

2) How many years have you been training?

I have been doing CrossFit for about 4 years.

3) Whats been the most challenging/hardest part of your journey so far? and how have you overcome them (set backs, rejections, injuries, basically anything difficult that you have had to overcome)

Choosing to not compete this year was probably the most difficult decision I have made in my career. It was needed though, and as it was tough to decide, as soon as I did I was very proud of my decision. As far as injury goes I have stayed fairly healthy, aside from a gnarly long lasting quad issue which for the most part is past now, but was a huge issue for nearly my whole season last year. I hardly did any type of squatting from January to the games last year, the pain in my legs/hips was unreal. I would go hate going to bed cuz even then I would ache so bad sleeping became an issue. I could go on and on about this but overall, I had to make some drastic changes to training, and included a bunch more recovery, massage, chiro and PT appointments. With more coaching on hand whats been and seemed most effective was the massage work by Ben @revivebodywork as well as Aimee & greg working with me a bunch on my form in squats and lifiting.

4) What does your typical workout/diet routine look like?

When I was training to be back at the games I would train 4-6 hours a day. A general day would look like: Wake up & Coffee Coach Breakfast & more Coffee
Train, Lunch, Train, Snack, Train, Home, errands and all other things I might need to do. Eat Romwod Sleep. Now with taking the year off, coaching more and being back in school, I am currently training 1-2 hours a day, occasionally with class at my local gym, and otherwise with my training partners. I will do strength, accessories and a workout, as well as forcing myself to get running in few days a week. I love food, but as my volume changes so does my food intake. I have a nutritionist who keeps me on track the best he can, checking in on me and giving me macros, but most is on me and making good decisions, or poor ones and only having myself to blame or nag too. ( I say this cuz I enjoy wine, tequila and some sweets) Overall, high or low volume my focus is to eat whole foods, lots of veggies, occasionally cereal and then of course enjoy a drink with friends.

5) What new knowledge have you learned over this past year regarding training, lifestyle and nutrition?

That you need to be having fun! Enjoy life, enjoy the process and have a WHY. I see all to often people spending so much time being in the gym, but I want to encourage people to apply their fitness outdoors, try new sports, do things with the family, kids, friends.

6) Whats your favourite cheat/Treat meal?

Cinnamon Rolls from my friend shelbi, who has a wonderful little bakery called @toosweetcakes

7) Whats one supplement that you could not live without?

I use blonyx creatine and beta nearly everyday I train!

8) If you had to start your Journey from scratch with your health & physique what would you do differently and why?

I would be sure to listen to my body, to spend more time on warming up and recovery. Those two are huge, and all too often I see people forgetting how important it is to actually take care of ourselves so the longevity in training can be allowed. I would focus on my form above all else, and learn all the basic level skills first. Our body is fragile, and taking time to learn all of these movements would have been so benefical.

9) Who do you look upto in the fitness industry and why?

Jacob Heppner: I think just seeing how honest, humble and hard working he is alone sets him apart. He is a good dude who takes CrossFit to another level with all his crazy ass workouts, as well as the way he mixes fun into them. How he handled 18.4 says a whole bunch about him too. He was one of the first to make friends with me when I made it to the games and in Boston at training grounds. Overall I have so much good to say about him, glad I know him, and look up to the way he handles everyday life inside and outside of Crossfit.

10) If you had to give one bit of advice to people starting out what would that be?

Be Patient, and don’t give up. Good Things can take time. Take the time to learn, take the time to let your body adjust to all you ask it to do. Have fun, Enjoy the hurt. It will be worth it.

11) What new goals do you have on the horizon?

I plan to graduate school, in a couple years of course. Get back to the Games when I am competing again, and to continue to inspire people.

12) Where can people find you? (website, social media accounts)

instagram, twitter, facebook @carlyfuhrer or search my name, Carly Fuhrer.
