12 Questions with Phil Graham


1) Who is Phil Graham? (where are you from, what do you do, a bit about yourself (hobbies, etc) 

Lisburn Northern Ireland, Sports Nutritionist, Type 1 Diabetic Author - Recently published the Diabetic Muscle and Fitness Guide which is being bought and read all over the world. I write, speak and educate the UK fitness industry. Entrepreneur, Coffee lover, nerd and confessed meat head. Love all things to do with nutrition and exercise physiology.


2) How many years have you been training?

12 .

3) Whats been the hardest part of your journey so far? and how have you overcome them (set backs, rejections, injuries, basically anything difficult that you have had to overcome)

I suffered a pec injury when I was 21 years old. That was my biggest set back in respect to training. Also, lack of support from friends and family was hard to take at the start of my training career. But, then again building a great body takes time, patience and utter commitment. Not many people are willing to pay the price. 

4) What does your typical workout/diet routine look like?

Nowadays i train all the basic human moves hip hinge, squat, push, pull and carry over 5 workouts. My workouts take 45 minutes to complete. I do a small amount of mobility work before and after my training. I also regulate my training volume and intensity according to my mood. This is an essential aspect to good recovery. Don’t just show up, train with intent and energy.

5) What have you learned over the past year regarding training, lifestyle and nutrition? 

1. What you eat across the whole day matters so much more than one meal.
2. There is no such thing as a bad or good food. The danger is in the dose/frequency.
3. When you add something in (training) you must add in extra recovery.

6) Whats your favourite cheat/Treat meal? 

Pick and Mix.

 7) one supplement that you could not live without?

Caffiene.

8) If you had to start out from scratch with your physique what would you do differently and why?

Less ego. Realise there are other more important things in life to build significance and value. Not just how you look. Patience.

9) Who do you look upto in the fitness industry and why?

That’s a tough one. Jamie Alderton for is discipline. Elite FTS for the community they have built. Greg Nucklous, Brad Shoenfield and Alan Aarragon for their clear cut evidence based knowledge.

10) If you had to give one bit of advice to people starting out what would that be?

Don’t complain about the work you didn’t do.

11) What new goals are on the horizon? (new goals, aims, etc)
